​​​​Welcome to this site for the Community Health and Development specialty area in the Department of Applied Behavioral Science at KU! The purpose of this site is to help broker and support community connections to contribute to improvements in communities through student and university-based service and engagement.  This site provides information and resources for community organizations interested in supporting community-university partnerships through service-learning in collaboration with faculty and staff from the Community Health and Development specialty area. We hope that whether you are a student or community partner, this site will help to extend opportunities for collaborative learning through community-university partnerships.


​​Service-Learning with Specialty Area Faculty and Students​

In the Community Health and Development specialty area, there are multiple opportunities to support student learning in community-based settings. A listing of specialty area courses and opportunities for community-university partnerships are listed below.
  • ​Practicum/Internship Opportunities- Through the Community Health and Development Practicum (ABSC 690/691) students partner with community-based sites to gain practical experience in applying community health and development competencies. The practicum supports students in serving the community partner site by applying a competency to help enhance the capacity and functioning of the organization or group. The competency areas supported through the pra​cticum include the following: (1) Coalition & partnership development; (2) Community needs assessment; (3) Community problem and goal analysis; (4) Logic model development; (5) Strategic planning; (6) Intervention development; (7) Cultural competency; (8) Change Advocacy; (9) Evaluation; (10) Social marketing; and (11) Sustainability.
  • Volunteer Service- Through the Building Healthy Communities course (ABSC 310/311), students are required to complete volunteer service in the community.​​
